Our trip to Chicama was something that we all lived with a lot of illusion since we knew that we were going to surf the most perfect and longest waves of our lives. And spoiler, we did.
I remember that day perfectly and I don't think I will ever forget it. It all started a few weeks before, we were in Lima, Peru surfing great waves, meeting amazing people and eating extraordinary food. What more could we ask for? I remember perfectly that the main reason why I was in Peru was only for the magic wave of Chicama. I remember that we all had in mind to go there, so we started to organize it. The local people from Lima who already knew Chicama and its wave helped us to organize it.
The forecast looked good to have perfect waves, 6 feet and the wind direction as it should be. Everything was in our favor. The only thing left to do was to take a 10 hour bus ride to Guanchaco, a town 45 minutes away from the famous Chicama wave. I have to say that, a few days after surfing in Chicama, we stayed a couple of days in Guanchaco surfing its very good waves as well.
When we got to Chicama we couldn't believe we were there. To our surprise we found that there were almost no people in town and even less in the water. The first day we went for a walk around the town to get to know it a little more, in the afternoon we went surfing, the swell had not yet arrived, but still we were able to catch some good waves and have a good time. In the evening we looked at the surf forecast again and realized that it was going to be early in the morning when the waves and swell were going to be better, so we planned to go to sleep as soon as possible to wake up early.
I remember the alarm clock went off at 5:45 in the morning, we were staying in a small hostel next to the beach, so just waking up, we went out to the balcony of the room and could not believe our eyes. Before us we had the longest and most perfect waves we had ever seen in our lives. We were all suddenly drowsy, put on our wetsuits as fast as we could and ran out into the water. The sun was just coming up, but the lines in the water were miles long, that was all we had come all the way to Chicama for.
Once in the water we realized that no matter how long and perfect the waves were, it was not going to be an easy swim. The current there was not comparable to any other surf spot we had surfed before, but that was not going to take away the illusion of surfing the best waves of our lives.
We spent a magical morning of surfing and many of us caught the longest waves of our lives, some of us even surpassed a minute and a half on the same wave, something that was impossible for us. We had fulfilled a dream and we had done it surfing the best waves of our lives.
In the afternoon we continued surfing and we had just as much fun, but it wasn't until the evening that a person who lived in Chicama came and told us that he had taken pictures and some video of the morning session. We couldn't believe it, we had pictures and videos of the longest and most perfect waves we had ever surfed. It was unforgettable.
